I was just running through a few emails and came across link from Caleb Walker. It's a little video called Story of Stuff. This is a video that not only should everyone see, but they should watch it at least once a week to combat the constant brainwashing that we receive in this country. The kind of brainwashing constructed by our friend Victor LeBeau
“Our enormously productive economy…demands that we make consumption
our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into
rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction,
in consumption…we need things consumed, burned up, replaced and
discarded at an ever-accelerating rate.” – Victor LeBeau, Retail Analyst Post WW II
who I guess we could refer to as the father of consumptionism. I particularly enjoyed the notion that our national happiness peaked in the 1950's and also the part about Planned Obsolescence and Perceived Obsolescence and that 99% of what is produced is trashed in six months. So, next time you're in the mood for shopping, maybe you should take twenty minutes, watch the video and ask yourself, "do I really need this?"
So I feel like I've been posting a lot of really politcal, sorta serious type stuff lately. So, I thought I'd put something up that's just plain old fun. In the tradition of Rube Goldberg, here's a little good, clean, subway fun. It's called The Machine. Enjoy.
Spend the Bailout Money on the Middle Class This is a great explanation of what's going on with our economic "bailout" aka corporate welfare and a great reminder that our "big government" truly does work for the corporation and not the populous. And if you were wondering what latent racism was up to, here's a nice little article from the Times.
DISCLAIMER: What you are about to see will possibly scare the living crap out of you. For all of the debates, discussions, interviews, vetting, it doesn't hold a candle to downright stupidity and assumption. This people are picking their President not based on policy, not based on temper, negotiation skills, foreign policy...any policy for that matter. They are picking the white guy and his running mate. And why? Because he's not black, and he's definitely not a terrorist. And the scariest part...I'm pretty sure this footage is from Pennsylvania. My state. Please, if you're watching this. Vote. Vote for the real reasons, not latent racism, fear, or stupidity. Vote Obama.
Thought I'd add a new section to ye olde sidebar. Commodities galore! Also, I've gotta give a big shout out to my girl
Heidi for Can you Dig It. She's like a jedi warrior of all things hip and pleasing to the eye. And most of these links
are gonna be coming from her. I can dig it, can you?
Over at Cadence Collection you'll find some great designer stuff. They keep it fresh, without getting trendy. Cycling focused, but not a pre-requisite.
This is the only thing I've seen in a while that was actually nice. It's a nice little movie that MissionWorkshop in SF did for their Shed Messenger Bag. Definitely worth taking a look at.
I used to think that snow globes were just boring souveniers from business trips. but these are morbidly excellent.
Currently, my most coveted item can be found here at Chicago WIG . They're completley customizable, and come with lots of strappies!
Here's a groovy little site with lots of plushy things, plastic things, and some pretty nice t-shirts. It's called My Plastic Heart and I likes it!
So Johnny Cupcakes is my
current favorite apparel company. Not only cause my girlfriend is a pastry chef, but I just really dig there logo.
How could I talk about cool commodities and not mention Neighborhoodies. Be the first
one on your block to rock one. It's fitty dollars that'll make you holla.
Here's a little something for everyone. I know it's a bit outta season, but if you live in Pittsburgh, we're always a bit outta season.
"I love these so much I almost passed out!" -- Heidi Mamula, June 2005. If that's not an endorsement for alex and
chloe I don't know what is.
here's a good one if your looking for a card for that special someone. and they'll have
to be real special.

So, go on, check it out and think what you will. And bring these sites your business, the man already has enough of your money.
I'm just putting this here for the sake of adding something to the Extra Extra. You should follow me on Twitter @jcolethomas. I say some interesting shit sometimes, and hardly post any pictures of my cats.
Just for the record. If you own an X-Terra, I probably hate you.
I know there's a lot of street art out there, glad to see that Pittsburgh is well represented.
There is also some real nice work from NYC here. I remember seeing Neck Face when I was in San Francisco, and thinking, what the heck is this shit? ...Now i know.
I thought I'd add this right in middle as it pertains directly the Wooster Collective. Take a look at Banksy He's doing some real nice quasi-politcal, anti-capitalist stuff. And I like it!
So, here's a bunch of stuff I wish I woulda thought of.
